Digital Photography and Photoshop
Dates – Held all year. Please use contact for information.
Workshop Fee - $375 [with a 1-day extension, $550]
This 2-day intermediate workshop is for those with basic experience with cameras and some knowledge of the photographic process, and who want to improve their capabilities in the digital world and explore techniques to produce better and more interesting images. The concentration is on control of the camera and image manipulation in Photoshop. The various technical aspects will be explained so as to assure full understanding.
Elements of visualizing and capturing a good image will be reviewed, including composition, lighting, shooting from different perspectives, the effects of different lenses and focal lengths, depth of field and shutter speed. How the camera operates is explained to provide a basis for better exposure, processing and printing. We will discuss, in non-technical terms, mega pixels, the conversion of the image to a digital image, buffers, and flash cards to clarify what they are and what they do, noise its cause and effects, and the differences and uses of JPEG, TIFF, and RAW formats. The basic controls of the camera are explained as are procedures for using them. Included are aperture and shutter priorities, program and manual modes, ISO settings, and auto focus, and how they inter-relate and can provide flexibility for each shot. Histograms, highlight warning indicators, and over and under exposure controls are covered. Advanced controls will also be discussed including continuous and bracketed shooting. These techniques will be reinforced in a field trip in the Albuquerque area designed to give us some great images.
Improving and/or modifying the image is done in Photoshop. Covered in some depth is Bridge, the RAW window and numerous plug-ins and supporting software. Working with stock images and some of the participant’s images we will review and use the various capabilities of Photoshop, including layers and selections, and apply them to the images seeing how they can be improved and modified. Printing, monitor calibration, ICC profiles for various papers, and paper characteristics are also covered.
A group dinner the first night (cost of the dinner is not included) is followed by an evening session wherein there will be a showing of digital prints and discussion of how they were taken and processed.
This workshop will provide the participant with a solid basis for generating fine images and producing them as quality prints.
EXTENSION OPTION – The workshop may be extended another day providing an additional field trip emphasizing shooting procedures, and more advanced instruction in the use of Photoshop and printing.
